Congress Subpoenas Drug-Testing Cheating Firms

The federal government appears ready to crack down on companies whose products are designed to "beat" drug tests. The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations subpoenaed the heads of the drug-test cheating industry's three top companies to testify at a congressional hearing on May 17. The companies additionally were required to submit financial and operational records to the congressional panel.

Executives from each of the three companies invoked their Fifth Amendment right and refused to comment before the panel. The hearing also featured testimony from advocates of workplace drug testing and a videotaped appearance by a prison inmate who told the panel about his experience with drug test-evasion products.

As a result of the hearing, lawmakers have promised to pass legislation to regulate companies whose products - ranging from tea to pills to synthetic urine - are designed to create false drug test results. Stay tuned for future issues of InfoMart News for the latest on this legislation.
